Container rental for moving
Container rental for moving: Here’s what you need to know
Containers are not only ideal for shipping goods or adding to an existing warehouse in the commercial sector. They are also frequently used as temporary storage by individuals – or, of course, companies, during a move. However, there are some things to take into account: How many containers will be necessary, and in which size?
Containers, of course, come in all sorts of different sizes. The most common variants used as storage containers are the TEU container – with a length of 20 feet – and the FEU container with a length of forty feet.

Usually, these standard containers are ideal for storage when you are moving. High cube variants of these standard containers are also quite popular, as they allow to store bulky items – or just a larger number of boxes, for example.
How many things fit into one container?
How much actually fits into a container certainly also depends on which kind of items you need to store. Bulky items such as machines or office furniture is harder to calculate than moving boxes.
As a rule of thumb, the interior of a two- to three-bedroom apartment fits into a TEU. A FEU can store the interior of a smaller family home.

Price: Container moving cost
The rental price for a shipping container depends on various factors. In addition to the size, the following factors also have an effect:
- duration of rental,
- delivery and collection costs.
The cheapest cargo container for moving is a simple 20-foot storage container, which can be set up without much effort. The rental price is around 100 € per month. In addition, there are the costs for transport and assembly, which depend on the length of the journey.
In case you are moving overseas, there are additional costs for the actual shipping. Please also note that in that case, the so-called LCL (“Less than Container Load”) might also be an option. LCL means that you share the container with other users, because you do not need the entire storing capacity of a sea container. In addition to the pure transport costs, also take into consideration surcharges such as customs duties or harbour fees.
What criteria need to be observed when arranging a storage container (UK)?
In the UK, no planning permission is required for a cargo container used for moving in most cases, as it is classified as a temporary structure. Of course, that might depend of the duration of the usage and the number of containers used. In case you not have the option of setting up the container on your own property, you do need a permission from the local council to set it up on public ground.
Advantages of using a container for moving
Aside from the fact that all containers are wind- and waterproof and therefore provide a safe spot for your furniture, books, electronic equipment, files and documents, they are also an extremely flexible option. You can rent as many containers as needed for as long as needed – there are no binding long-term contracts. Additionally, you can also check for options to store the containers at a warehouse during removal, if you do not have immediate access to the new location.
